چکیده

Larger than life, surrounded by an aura of guarded omniscience, and armored with a genial affable style, Herman B Wells reinvented Indiana University as a significant participant among the nation's public research universities. The story of this twentyfive-year transformation has been ably told in the third and final volume of Thomas D. Clark's fine institutional history, Indiana University: Midwestem Pioneer, Years of Fulfillment (1977), but the full biography of its prime mover has, until now, remained something of a mystery. Wells, president from 1937 to 1962 and university chancellor until his death in 2000, proved remarkably adept at deflecting close observation of his personal life by continuously living in public spaces, working for multiple and distinct groups in different places, and often managing multiple assignments and responsibilities at the same time. Out of this incredibly active existence. Wells developed a seemingly limitless and dynamic network of friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and collaborators who insulated him from most close observation, with the possible exception of perhaps a few confidants with an admirable cornmitment to discretion. These characteristics make the challenge of a biographer especially difficult. Fortunately, James H. Capshew's Herman B Wells brings exhaustive research, careful analysis, sympathetic but clear-eyed assessment of his subject, and a deep understanding of Indiana University to this challenge. Although Wells's biography has its beginning in small-town Indiana, by 1930 the narrative quickly becomes the story of the university, the man, and their unbreakable and symbiotic relationship. It tells of how Wells, before even completing his graduate work, had leveraged his rapidly expanding network of colleagues and

Beyond the Limitations of API RP-14E Erosional Velocity -A Field Study for Gas Condensate Wells

Fluid velocity has the potential to cause severe erosion damage to oil & gas production infrastructure. In order to avoid or alleviate damage due to erosion, the American Petroleum Institute Recommended Practice (API RP) 14E recommends a threshold fluid velocity for production tubing and pipelines. However, field and laboratory data have proven that the applied empirical constants, known as C-f...

Covenant, Promise, and the Gift of Time

If we categorize religions according to whether they give greater prominence to time or to space, the role of “promise” marks a religion of covenant as clearly a religion of time. Yet the future is unknowable and can only be present to us as a field of possibilities. How far do these possibilities extend? The question directs us back to the nature of time, a question that became concealed in th...

Use of Numerical Simulation to Measure the Effect of Relief Wells for Decreasing Uplift in a Homogeneous Earth Dam

Relief wells are used extensively to relieve excess hydrostatic pressure in pervious foundation strata overlain by impervious top strata, conditions which often exist landward of levees and downstream of dams and hydraulic structures. Placing well outlets in below-surface trenches or collector pipes helps dry up seepage areas downstream of levees and dams. Relief wells are often used in combina...

Investigation of Relief Wells Performance in Decreasing Uplift Pressure in Foundation of Embankment Dams

The design of relief wells includes determination of the distance of relief wells from each other, their distance from the dam upstream, the well diameter and discharge into each wells. This study tends to investigate these factors effect on uplift pressure in earth dams. For this purpose, finite elements method (FEM) was used for different configuration of relief wells in downstream of an eart...

Distribution of groundwater nitrate in Dehloran, Iran: A case study using GIS

Nitrate has been the most common chemical contaminant in water resource. This ion is introduced into the water via different ways, but more items of nitrate pollution was connected with farming-based drainage and sewage effluent. In this descriptive-analytical study, groundwater nitrate and nitrite concentrations of 8 wells on Dehloran, Ilam, Iran, were analyzed in 2015 to determine the causes ...
